HipHop Academy

The HipHop Academy Hamburg is a non-profit project, unique in Germany, for young people aged between six and 25. The aim is to instil in young people the values of hip-hop culture, such as openness, tolerance, discipline, non-violence, respect and community spirit. Various courses centred on hip-hop culture are now offered at around 40 locations across the greater Hamburg area. More than 800 young people took part in the free breaking, rap, beatboxing, DJing, singing, producing and graffiti sessions in 2024. The sessions are regularly led by well-known figures from the scene.

The most dedicated students may be accepted into the HipHop Academy Hamburg’s Masterclass. The Masterclass is a certified training programme of international standard, offering students a part-time hip-hop training course that is unique in Germany. The Masterclass is funded by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the Ministry of Culture and Media, and the Hubertus Wald Foundation. The HipHop Academy Hamburg Masterclass is an intensive one-year training programme for young talents aged between 18 and 25 who wish to develop into professional hip-hop stage artists. Over the course of a year packed with creative inspiration, in-depth knowledge and practical experience, they receive comprehensive basic training in the various areas of hip-hop culture – free of charge.

Whether it’s dance, rap, production, singing or graffiti – in the Masterclass, students can deepen their individual artistic profile. Alongside the focus on their main subject, students can expect additional modules such as music theory, stage practice, the basics of the music business, physiotherapy and cultural background knowledge relating to hip-hop and dance – trips abroad are also part of the programme: for example, to Marseille, Copenhagen or Shanghai. The more than 350 teaching hours are complemented by workshops with established figures from the scene. The highlight is a student-led stage production, in which students put what they have learnt into practice on their own initiative.
